Leaders from Italy, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Bolivia, the U.K., Iceland, and many more expressed their concerns for the United States.
The scene displayed at America’s Capitol building earlier today (January 6) not only caused a standstill for the nation’s citizens but for a global audience, as well. In the morning, President Donald Trump held a “Stop The Steal” rally where he encouraged his followers to do whatever they could to put an end to what he insists is election fraud—a claim that has been debunked from state to state. Still, his millions of supporters have continued to stand behind him, and thousands descended on the Capitol building as Congress was in session, certifying the Electoral College votes for President-Elect Joe Biden.

Canadians are deeply disturbed and saddened by the attack on democracy in the United States, our closest ally and neighbour. Violence will never succeed in overruling the will of the people. Democracy in the US must be upheld – and it will be.

Disgraceful scenes in U.S. Congress. The United States stands for democracy around the world and it is now vital that there should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power.

Very distressing scenes at the US Congress. We condemn these acts of violence and look forward to a peaceful transfer of Government to the newly elected administration in the great American democratic tradition.

The US Congress is a temple of democracy.
To witness tonight’s scenes in #WashingtonDC is a shock.
We trust the US to ensure a peaceful transfer of power to @JoeBiden

Today’s mob violence at the Capitol is the culmination of Trump’s sustained assault on American democracy. The President should call on the mob he incited to disperse and go home. And Trump’s supporters in the GOP and the media should reflect on what they have enabled. https://t.co/UjemsmW6bJ

I am following what is happening in #Washington with great concern. Violence is incompatible with the exercise of democratic rights and freedoms. I am confident in the strength and robustness of the institutions of the United States. #CapitolHill

Colombia has full confidence in the stability of the institutions of the United States of America, as well as its respect for democracy and the rule of law, values shared by our countries since the beginning of our republic.

An attack on Capitol Hill is an attack on democracy. We are witnessing disturbing scenes of violence in Washington DC. Liberty, democracy and decency must be respected.

Unbelievable scenes from Washington D.C. This is a totally unacceptable attack on democracy. A heavy responsibility now rests on President Trump to put a stop to this.
